PART 1
My twin brother, Lucas, and his wife, Hannah,
had spent years trying to have a child of their own.
When they finally approached me and asked whether
I would be willing to become their surrogate, I said yes.
Lucas had always been more than just a brother to me.
He was my closest friend, someone who had stood by
my side and supported me throughout my entire life.
I already had a son, so I knew how powerful a parent’s love
could be and understood just how desperately Lucas and
Hannah wanted a child. I wanted to give them that happiness.
Besides, whenever I watched Lucas playing with my son or simply
spending time with him, I could see that those were the moments when he felt happiest.
When the couple learned they were expecting a girl,
they could hardly contain their excitement.
They began filling their home with tiny dresses,
adorable toys, and all the little things they had dreamed
of buying for their child. They even painted the nursery
green in preparation for her arrival.
When the day finally came and I gave birth,
Lucas and Hannah hurried straight to my hospital room.
The moment Hannah laid eyes on her baby girl,
tears of happiness streamed down her face.
Then Lucas reached out and lifted the newborn into his arms.
He gazed at her for several seconds without saying a word.
Suddenly, the color drained from his face.
I immediately wondered whether something was
wrong and asked if he was all right. His voice shook as he finally answered me.
“I’m sorry, but… I can’t take her.”
For a moment, I couldn’t believe what I had just heard.
“Lucas, that’s your daughter. What are you saying?”
He turned and looked directly at Hannah.
Then he faced me again and repeated, “I’m sorry, but I’m not taking her home with me!”
With that, he placed the newborn back into my arms.
Hannah’s eyes filled with tears as she desperately
demanded to know why they couldn’t bring their own daughter home.
Lucas let out a long breath. His face grew red as he spoke.
“Look at her back. We can’t do this. She can’t be our daughter.”
I turned my attention to the baby’s back, and what I saw nearly caused me to collapse.
Hannah let out a scream so loud that it echoed throughout the entire hospital floor.
Her cries were so alarming that medical staff came rushing into the room to find out what had happened.
